Of course while there are definitely some things to do when choosing a baby name, there are some other things that you DON'T want to do. Here are a few Don'ts that you definitely need to remember.

- DON'T use a name of someone you don't care for. The last thing you want is to associate your baby with a name of someone you can't stand. Even if the name is beautiful, don't do this to your child.

- DON'T make the baby name difficult to pronounce or write. No child wants a name that is a tongue twister to pronounce. So, keep it simple and something that will be fairly easy for your child to pronounce and write.

- DON'T get friends and family members involved in your decision. This will only make everything a whole lot more complicated. Just keep it between you and your partner. After all, it's already complicated enough with just the two of you.

- DON'T wait until the delivery to decide to voice your opinion on the names you've considered. The last thing you want to do is be going through this in the delivery room. When the baby is born, they are going to ask what you are naming the baby. It's best to be prepared long before the delivery occurs.

This information is keep track of for a variety of reasons, but most people use it to help give them inspiration for their child's name. The site gives you the option of checking what the most popular names are for male and female children for the year in particular. It will also allow you to search back and see what names were the most popular for both sexes in any given year. At the same time, you can look back and see how the popularity of any certain name has changed over the years. Try looking up your name or the name of your child, or the name you are thinking about for a child if you don't have any yet. Baby name books or websites are a great source of ideas. You can search by first letter or language. If your family is of Italian origin, you can search to find a great name that fits your baby’s heritage. Some sites have a search feature that can be used to look up the meaning of a name or to search by meaning.

Once you have chosen a few baby names, try them out. When I was pregnant with our second daughter, my husband pretended to call her for dinner by the two names we were considering. Yes, I laughed at him. It was ridiculous, but it actually helped us make a decision. Say the first, middle and last names out loud. How does it sound?

Write your favorite names. Are they easy to spell? Will they be misspelled throughout the child’s life? Take a look at the initials to be sure they don’t spell a word. Andrea Sarah Smith or Pamela Irene Greene would not be good choices. Eventually someone will notice and your child will not be happy with you.

How do you feel about nicknames? Think of the possible nicknames and avoid any that have a very common nickname. For example, if you love Christopher but hate Chris, you may want to reconsider your choice. You can instruct family and close friends to use Christopher, but eventually he will be Chris.

Choosing the perfect baby name can be a very challenging task. Imagine your child at every age, from birth through adulthood. How will it work at each stage? A really cute name for a baby boy may not fit a grown man or someone’s grandfather. How would the first and last name sound on a college application or look on a business card? With literally hundreds, if not thousands of baby names to choose from how can you find the right one? During your months of pregnancy you will most likely spend a lot of time thinking about this. Since your child’s name will stay with them for the rest of their lives, it is also one of the first and most important decisions you will make for your child. Here are some tips that may help.

Brainstorm a list of names
Sit down with your partner and just brainstorm an initial list of names. Don’t think about first or last names at this point, just names you have heard and like. Remember, the number one rule of brainstorming is to not prejudge. Over the next few weeks continue to add to the list.

Don’t do it alone
Everyone must be happy with your child’s name. It is important for both parents to work together and negotiate in order to find a name both will like. During my wife’s pregnancies we would email, leave phone calls and notes with names. We both agreed upfront that both of us would have to like a name to use it. There were many that I loved that she hated and vice versa. It is important to give and take a little to find a name both parents will be happy with.
Don’t forget to solicit parents, friends and relatives. While ultimately it will be your decision and your partners, we found it very helpful to bounce names off of friends and relatives.

The Sound of the Name By now you should have a decent list of names. You may or may not want to throw a few family names into the mix. Now is the time to start combining the names. How do the first and last names sound together? While they may sound good at first, that could change when you add a middle name. Take your names and mix and match first and middle names. Sometimes you will be surprised and what you thought of as a first name may end up as a last name and vice versa.

Think about nicknames, spellings and abbreviations
This is important. As your child grows will kids make sure of your child’s name or come up with an unfavorable nickname? Another consideration is to take the first letter of your baby’s first, middle and last name and put them together. Does it spell anything unfavorable? Pick 3 or 4 names and wait for the baby to arrive
This is probably my best advice. What may have seemed like a great name when you decided on it may not ‘fit’ your new child! For example, when our first son was born we instantly knew his name would be Kailan, which has a name meaning of ‘mighty warrior’. He came out at 10 lbs and it was a real fitting name. The birth certificate does not have to be issued right away, so take your time with your new baby before you leave the hospital and see what ‘fits’ his or her looks or attitude!

Baby names, there are thousands to pick from. During your pregnancy, you may spend a fair amount of time considering names for your baby. You may have some names in mind even before you get pregnant. If not, a good baby name book may help. There are many websites with databases of baby names for you to peruse. Once you have found the perfect name, you will have to negotiate with your partner. There are several things to consider when choosing the perfect name for your baby. Here are some questions to ask when selecting a name:

How does the name sound alone and with your last name? 

Say the name out loud to hear how it sounds. My husband did this with our second daughter. He had two names that he liked and he’d pretend to call her using both names to see which he liked better. At the time, I laughed at him, but it did work. When saying the name with your last name, make sure they don’t rhyme. In most cases, a multi syllable first name sounds good with a single syllable last name and vice versa. 

What are some common nicknames for the name you like? 

Do you like the nicknames used for the name you have chosen? Even if you don’t use the nickname, there’s no guarantee it won’t be used when your child gets to school. For example, if you love the name Zachary, but hate Zack, you may want to pick another name. When the baby is small, you have control. You will lose that control later on. Be sure the name has a nickname you can live with. 

What are the initials? 

When selecting a first, middle and last name, consider your child’s initials. You may over look this, but the kids in school won’t. Amanda Sarah Smith is a lovely name with very unfortunate initials, as is Frances Allen Thomson. Be sure the initials of your child’s name don’t spell anything, especially anything that can lead to ridicule. Kids can be cruel.

Do you want to use a family name?

Some people choose the name of a family member for their child. Many of the older names are coming back in style, while others are still outdated and not attractive. If you choose a family name, make sure you like the name. My youngest is named for my grandmother, Madeleine. This was both to honor her and because I really did love her name. 

If you want to honor a grandparent, but hate the name, consider it as a middle name. Our other three children all carry the middle name of a grandparent. If you don’t like it as a middle name either, consider the Jewish tradition and use the first initial of the name. For example, if your grandfather’s name was Joe, you could use Jacob or Jason to honor his memory. 

What does the name mean? 

Some people choose a name for its meaning. When you are reading the baby book, pay attention to the meanings of the names you like. You may find something both beautiful and meaningful. 

What associations does the name have for you?

Some names carry an association with them. These can be either positive or negative associations. It could be someone you really liked or someone you didn’t get along with when you were in school. Skip any names that have a negative association for you or your spouse.

How will you spell it? 

Invented spellings have been popular in recent years. This can be unique or can cause problems for your child. If the name will be difficult to spell or pronounce, you may want to re think the spelling. It can be frustrating for your child if no one ever spells her name right. 

How to negotiate for the name you want? 

Once you have found the perfect name for your baby, you will need to convince your partner that it’s perfect. You only need to negotiate with your partner, not your mother, mother in law, sister or friends. There are a few ways you can negotiate for the name you want. You can each make a list of your top five or ten favorites and compare lists. One of you can choose the first name while the other chooses the middle name. One parent can choose a girl’s name, while the other chooses for a boy. If either of you really hates a name, that person should have veto power.
