" hspace="5" vspace="5" width="300" height="199" align="left" />Choosing the perfect name for your baby is definitely very important. It is perhaps one of the first big and most important decisions a parent will have. The name of your child will last a lifetime. Of course it is not always something that is easy to do. Sometimes it can be an exciting decision, while others find it to be pretty frustrating as well. There are definitely some mistakes that you can avoid and some tips that can make the process easier and more enjoyable. Here is a look at some of the do's and don’ts of picking out the perfect baby name, as well as some tips to help you out as well.

Naming Your Baby – Do's of Picking the right Baby Name

Trying to figure out what to name your baby? Well, here are some things to DO when you are going through the process of trying to find the perfect baby name.

- DO come up with a list of names you really like. Come up with a separate list with your partner. Then use your two lists to come up with a list of 5-10 names that you both agree on. Think about the list or even keep it until your baby is born. There may be something along the way that helps you to settle on one of those names on the list.

- DO consider a name that is meaningful. Names from history, family names, and names of people that you admire are great choices. It often provides a child with a sense of direction as well.

- DO take a variety of names into consideration. Take the time to explore various names that are out there. This way you are not limited to a few names that come to your mind.

- DO make it a fun time with your partner. Remember, you don't have to do this all in one night. Don't allow it to become a heated debate. You want to make this a great memory instead of one that is stressful.

Don'ts of Choosing a Baby Name

Of course while there are definitely some things to do when choosing a baby name, there are some other things that you DON'T want to do. Here are a few Don'ts that you definitely need to remember.

- DON'T use a name of someone you don't care for. The last thing you want is to associate your baby with a name of someone you can't stand. Even if the name is beautiful, don't do this to your child.

- DON'T make the baby name difficult to pronounce or write. No child wants a name that is a tongue twister to pronounce. So, keep it simple and something that will be fairly easy for your child to pronounce and write.

- DON'T get friends and family members involved in your decision. This will only make everything a whole lot more complicated. Just keep it between you and your partner. After all, it's already complicated enough with just the two of you.

- DON'T wait until the delivery to decide to voice your opinion on the names you've considered. The last thing you want to do is be going through this in the delivery room. When the baby is born, they are going to ask what you are naming the baby. It's best to be prepared long before the delivery occurs.

Important Tips to Remember when Naming Your Baby

Now that you've seen some of the do's and don'ts of choosing baby names, here are some top tips. They'll help you out as you go through your search for the perfect name for your new little one.

- Tip #1 – Start Your Search Early - One important tip is to start your search for a baby name early on. More than likely you'll both change your mind several times before you come up with the perfect name. So, it's definitely a great idea to make sure that you allow yourself plenty of time to come up with the right one. This will make it much easier for you.

- Tip #2 – The Internet Can Be Helpful - The internet can be helpful to you when you are trying to find the perfect baby name. You'll find many great sites that offer many names to check out. The more names you think about, the more options you have. This will help you to get a good idea of the types of names that you really like and enjoy. So, check online for some top baby naming resources.

- Tip #3 – Stay Away from Trendy Names - When you are choosing your baby's name, it's a good idea to stay away from trendy names. You don't want a name that is just based on a current trend. You want something that will be beautiful forever. So, don't just choose a name because it's the vogue name to use. Classic names may be a better choice for your baby.

- Tip #4 – Consider Getting Original - You may even want to consider getting original with the name for your baby. You don't have to go with a name that already exists. You can actually make up the baby name on your own. Consider combining a couple names that you like to come up with a unique and beautiful name. Just make sure you don't come up with a name that your child will spend their life being teased about. No kid wants to be the joke of the playground because of their name.

Finally, one last tip that personally helped us. Have more than one name ready. No matter how much you may plan, one of those backup names may just prove to match your new baby perfectly when you see her/him for the first time!

If your daughter's name is Emily, or you are thinking about naming your new baby Emily, you may be either very pleased or repulsed by the fact that it is on the list of top ten baby names for the last 12 years....

Choosing a name for your baby is perhaps one of the most important and difficult decisions for new parents. If your daughter's name is Emma, or you are thinking about naming your new baby Emma, you may be either very pleased or upset by the fact that it has landed on the list of top ten baby names for the year 2008, and has been for the last twelve years. That means that out of all of the girls in the United States, more of them are named Emma than anything else, and it has been this way for more than a decade. Emily and Ava come right after Emma, followed by names like Madison, Ava, Olivia, and Sohpia among the top names for female children.

Top boy Baby Names

The most popular male name for 2008? It's Jacob; that is an unexpected one for many people. Jacob for a boy's name was followed closely by Michael, Ethan and Joshua, all good names for respectable boys growing into men.

Other names that are popular for female children are names that have a divine meaning, like Serenity, Trinity, Destiny, and Faith. These are names that more spiritual parents give their children as a constant reminder of their spirituality, and for that reason they are one of the top types of names for girl babies every year.

By now, you might be wondering how anybody gets this information. As a matter of fact, the Social Security Administration compiles, keeps track of, and releases this information. Their website offers a wealth of information on baby names that have been used for further back than most people would ever care to look for. Information as far back as the late 1800s is available regarding popular baby names, and it can all be accessed through the Social Security Administration website.

This information is keep track of for a variety of reasons, but most people use it to help give them inspiration for their child's name. The site gives you the option of checking what the most popular names are for male and female children for the year in particular. It will also allow you to search back and see what names were the most popular for both sexes in any given year. At the same time, you can look back and see how the popularity of any certain name has changed over the years. Try looking up your name or the name of your child, or the name you are thinking about for a child if you don't have any yet. Put in the name, the sex that it is associated with, and the number of years that you want to look back. That should pull up the information that you need, and you may be surprised at what you find.

The Social Security Administration website also gives you the opportunity to look back and see what the most popular names were the year you were born, and just so long as you are not under 12 years old, the most popular name for your year should not be Emma.

The first and most lasting gift you will give your child is his or her name. There is probably no other event in pregnancy that evokes such strong opinions as the name of the baby. Here is a quick guide to help the baby naming process.

The first and most lasting gift you will give your child is his or her name. There is probably no other event in pregnancy that evokes such strong opinions as the name of the baby. You will have to negotiate with your spouse or partner, especially if you have different tastes in names. Your mother, mother in law and the check out girl may have opinions as well. Whether you listen to these is entirely up to you.

One way to start is for each of you to create a list of baby names you like for girls and boys. Compare the lists. Are there any names on both lists? If there are, you are extremely lucky. As you are looking at each other’s lists, check any names that you like or may consider. During this process, each person should have the right of refusal. A name that invokes a strong negative reaction should be removed from the list.

If you can’t find a name you like, browse the family tree. The name of a grandparent or other distant relative may catch your eye. This is how we chose our daughter, Madeleine’s name. She is named for my grandmother. Her middle name, Isabella, is for my husband’s grandmother. A beautiful Jewish tradition is to choose a name with the first initial of a loved one who is deceased.

Baby name books or websites are a great source of ideas. You can search by first letter or language. If your family is of Italian origin, you can search to find a great name that fits your baby’s heritage. Some sites have a search feature that can be used to look up the meaning of a name or to search by meaning.

Once you have chosen a few baby names, try them out. When I was pregnant with our second daughter, my husband pretended to call her for dinner by the two names we were considering. Yes, I laughed at him. It was ridiculous, but it actually helped us make a decision. Say the first, middle and last names out loud. How does it sound?

Write your favorite names. Are they easy to spell? Will they be misspelled throughout the child’s life? Take a look at the initials to be sure they don’t spell a word. Andrea Sarah Smith or Pamela Irene Greene would not be good choices. Eventually someone will notice and your child will not be happy with you.

How do you feel about nicknames? Think of the possible nicknames and avoid any that have a very common nickname. For example, if you love Christopher but hate Chris, you may want to reconsider your choice. You can instruct family and close friends to use Christopher, but eventually he will be Chris.

Choosing the perfect baby name can be a very challenging task. Imagine your child at every age, from birth through adulthood. How will it work at each stage? A really cute name for a baby boy may not fit a grown man or someone’s grandfather. How would the first and last name sound on a college application or look on a business card? Congratulations on your new baby and good luck!

New Software for Mothers, Removes the Labor from the Baby-naming process.

Infinite Web Solutions announces the availability of the first ever software designed for choosing baby names. Easily accessible, centralized, and with the largest collection of names, it quickly downloads to PC’s and laptops for anytime use. It is the ideal solution for parents.

Atlanta, Ga. – July 2, 2007 – In an effort to optimize the baby-naming process for parents, “Infinite Web Solutions” a Georgia based company, today unveiled the premier software program designed to simplify and change how people will now search for baby names.

The software, “1 STOP BABY NAMES,” uses the latest technology and is being offered in a convenient and easily downloadable format on the company’s website, www.1stopbabynames.com

Key concepts behind the software’s creation are; personalization and usability. The end user is not redirected to several links, as is the feature of most websites and also the number one complaint voiced by survey participants. Because the usual unwanted chatter found on baby-naming websites is eliminated, the experience has a more intimate, and convenient feel for the user.

“1 STOP BABY NAMES,” surpasses current website capabilities and presents more options to the user by: offering over 40,000 names and their meanings, 100+ origins, and the top 100 baby names for the past five years. The distinct feature of the software’s portability allows for easy storage and use in a centralized location without distraction.

Every year the social security administration compiles a myrad of information. One piece of information that is useful and interesting to parenting planning a baby is their Top 10 Names.

Naming a baby can be as easy as using your grandfather’s name or naming your baby using the month he or she was born, for instance, May. Some parents seem to argue for the whole nine months of pregnancy and then end up choosing baby names instantly when they see him or her and discovers a particular name just “fits”.

As parents of the soon-to-be-born child, everyone around you will be giving out suggestions in choosing baby names. Although you may receive a few unique names you’d love your child to have, picking only one name from the hundreds of rare and meaningful collection can be a very confusing decision.

Nine Months Of Research: Still Not Enough?

After pregnancy, your child will be his or her own identity. The first responsibility you will perform is deciding the name of your child, which he or she will be using for the rest of their lives. Since each pregnancy takes nine months, you have all the time in the world to prepare for your first responsibility.

However, since your child’s gender will not be revealed until the 5th month of pregnancy, your choosing a baby name as early as discovering the pregnancy test is positive may not be such a good idea. If you have settled on a baby girl’s name and it turned out to be a boy, your entire research and debating will all be useless.

Once you have determined the gender of your child, you and your partner can now list down your favorite names for a boy (if your baby is a boy). When you list down the names, don’t dwell on each name too much. Just keep adding a few names on that list for the next weeks to come.

Never choose a baby name on your own. During pregnancy, a woman’s physical and emotional state changes, making you more vulnerable to stress and other illnesses. For this reason, you should ensure that your partner, family and friends give suggestions to make things easier.

Some partners enter a never-ending debate when choosing baby names. Before starting the brainstorming, make sure that you have an agreement with your partner to pick a name that both of you will like. Although there will be some names that you will love while your partner won’t and vice versa, be patient because the perfect name will just present itself to you before your pregnancy labor.

It’s All In The Name

When you have put together a complete list of names, you can now judge each name on the list. The best way to see if a name will suit your child is to add a last name to the “proposed” name. Add the child’s middle name and recite the complete name several times. When you hear the complete name at first, you may like the sound of it, but as you continue to recite it, you may think that the name is not good enough.

If you want a meaningful name, check your list of baby names and research their definitions. This is important because as your child grows up and faces other children, his or her playmates may create alternatives and other spellings of your given name that can lead to unfavorable nicknames.

When eight months have passed and your pregnancy will soon be over, you should decide on at least four names. This will ensure that if the baby comes, you won’t be arguing on what name should be written on the birth certificate.

During your months of pregnancy you will most likely spend a lot of time thinking about this. Since your child’s name will stay with them for the rest of their lives, it is also one of the first and most important decisions you will make for your child. Here are some tips that may help.

Brainstorm a list of names
Sit down with your partner and just brainstorm an initial list of names. Don’t think about first or last names at this point, just names you have heard and like. Remember, the number one rule of brainstorming is to not prejudge. Over the next few weeks continue to add to the list.

Don’t do it alone
Everyone must be happy with your child’s name. It is important for both parents to work together and negotiate in order to find a name both will like. During my wife’s pregnancies we would email, leave phone calls and notes with names. We both agreed upfront that both of us would have to like a name to use it. There were many that I loved that she hated and vice versa. It is important to give and take a little to find a name both parents will be happy with.
Don’t forget to solicit parents, friends and relatives. While ultimately it will be your decision and your partners, we found it very helpful to bounce names off of friends and relatives.

The Sound of the Name By now you should have a decent list of names. You may or may not want to throw a few family names into the mix. Now is the time to start combining the names. How do the first and last names sound together? While they may sound good at first, that could change when you add a middle name. Take your names and mix and match first and middle names. Sometimes you will be surprised and what you thought of as a first name may end up as a last name and vice versa.

Think about nicknames, spellings and abbreviations
This is important. As your child grows will kids make sure of your child’s name or come up with an unfavorable nickname? Or what seems cute when your child is a baby may not be cute anymore as your child gets older. Another consideration is to take the first letter of your baby’s first, middle and last name and put them together. Does it spell anything unfavorable? Not many parents think of this is not a realization you want to make after the birth certificate is issued!

Research name meanings
There are tons of places on the internet where you can find the meaning of a name, and there is a lot of software you can buy. This can be a fun time to explore the origins of a name and may lead you do new names you have not thought about. Are you Irish? Check out some Gaelic names for example.

Pick 3 or 4 names and wait for the baby to arrive
This is probably my best advice. What may have seemed like a great name when you decided on it may not ‘fit’ your new child! For example, when our first son was born we instantly knew his name would be Kailan, which has a name meaning of ‘mighty warrior’. He came out at 10 lbs and it was a real fitting name. The birth certificate does not have to be issued right away, so take your time with your new baby before you leave the hospital and see what ‘fits’ his or her looks or attitude!

Good luck with your baby names from all of us at More4kids!

Baby names, there are thousands to pick from. During your pregnancy, you may spend a fair amount of time considering names for your baby. You may have some names in mind even before you get pregnant. If not, a good baby name book may help. There are many websites with databases of baby names for you to peruse. Once you have found the perfect name, you will have to negotiate with your partner. There are several things to consider when choosing the perfect name for your baby. Here are some questions to ask when selecting a name:

How does the name sound alone and with your last name?

Say the name out loud to hear how it sounds. My husband did this with our second daughter. He had two names that he liked and he’d pretend to call her using both names to see which he liked better. At the time, I laughed at him, but it did work. When saying the name with your last name, make sure they don’t rhyme. In most cases, a multi syllable first name sounds good with a single syllable last name and vice versa.

What are some common nicknames for the name you like?

Do you like the nicknames used for the name you have chosen? Even if you don’t use the nickname, there’s no guarantee it won’t be used when your child gets to school. For example, if you love the name Zachary, but hate Zack, you may want to pick another name. When the baby is small, you have control. You will lose that control later on. Be sure the name has a nickname you can live with.

What are the initials?

When selecting a first, middle and last name, consider your child’s initials. You may over look this, but the kids in school won’t. Amanda Sarah Smith is a lovely name with very unfortunate initials, as is Frances Allen Thomson. Be sure the initials of your child’s name don’t spell anything, especially anything that can lead to ridicule. Kids can be cruel.

Do you want to use a family name?

Some people choose the name of a family member for their child. Many of the older names are coming back in style, while others are still outdated and not attractive. If you choose a family name, make sure you like the name. My youngest is named for my grandmother, Madeleine. This was both to honor her and because I really did love her name.

If you want to honor a grandparent, but hate the name, consider it as a middle name. Our other three children all carry the middle name of a grandparent. If you don’t like it as a middle name either, consider the Jewish tradition and use the first initial of the name. For example, if your grandfather’s name was Joe, you could use Jacob or Jason to honor his memory.

What does the name mean?

Some people choose a name for its meaning. When you are reading the baby book, pay attention to the meanings of the names you like. You may find something both beautiful and meaningful.

What associations does the name have for you?

Some names carry an association with them. These can be either positive or negative associations. It could be someone you really liked or someone you didn’t get along with when you were in school. Skip any names that have a negative association for you or your spouse.

How will you spell it?

Invented spellings have been popular in recent years. This can be unique or can cause problems for your child. If the name will be difficult to spell or pronounce, you may want to re think the spelling. It can be frustrating for your child if no one ever spells her name right.

How to negotiate for the name you want?

Once you have found the perfect name for your baby, you will need to convince your partner that it’s perfect. You only need to negotiate with your partner, not your mother, mother in law, sister or friends. There are a few ways you can negotiate for the name you want. You can each make a list of your top five or ten favorites and compare lists. One of you can choose the first name while the other chooses the middle name. One parent can choose a girl’s name, while the other chooses for a boy. If either of you really hates a name, that person should have veto power.
