C Section Recovery by Patricia Hughes
If you have a c section, or are planning to deliver your baby with a c section for medical reasons, you may be surprised at the amount of time needed to recover. I found this out with the birth of my fourth child a few weeks ago. He was my first c section delivery. I went into labor eight days past my due date. After about 12 hours of labor, I was fully dilated. The problem in my case was that the baby’s head wouldn’t come down far enough to be born vaginally. No matter what we did, he just wouldn’t budge. Soon his heart rate began to drop and it was off to the operating room.

A note from Julie: The decision to breastfeed should be made ahead of time. This article describes some of the benefits. I breastfed my first son and am now going on to breastfeed our most recent addition to our family. It can be physically and emotionally exhausting at times but feel it is well worth it.

- Start off slowly and don’t try to do too much. If you feel tired, slow down or stop. Listen to your body. You can gradually build up your pace over time.
- Be careful not to get overheated. If you are overheated, so is your baby. If the weather is very hot or very cold, go to the gym and use the treadmill.
- Stay hydrated when you are working out. Drink water before, during and after exercise.
- Pay attention to your heart rate. Keep it under 140 beats per minute. If your heart rate is getting too high, slow down to bring it under control.
- Pay attention to your breathing. You should be able to talk during your work out. If you can’t, you are doing too much. Slow down the intensity or stop if necessary.
- Stop and call your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms: short of breath, dizzy, bleeding, contractions or headache.

Soon after you learn you are pregnant, you will need to think about your job. Will you go back or stay home with the new baby? If you plan to return to your job, you will need to think about your maternity leave. The better you plan your leave, the more you will be able to relax and enjoy your new baby when the time comes. Start planning early in your pregnancy. Figure out how much paid time you have available and how much unpaid time you can afford to take.
