The baby continues to develop at a rapid rate. It is now a fetus. By the end of this month, the baby is about three and a half inches long. The baby weighs just eleven grams. The head is about half the size of the body by the end of the month.

The heart now has four chambers. The fetal heart rate can vary from 120 to 160 beats per minute. Some people say the fetal heart rate can be used to predict gender. This can be fun, but isn’t always reliable. For now, you’ll need to wait and just imagine the baby. The genitals are forming, but are too small to show on ultrasound.

The second month of pregnancy is one of the most crucial in your baby’s development. There are many changes in the embryo this month. The heart is beating. The heartbeat can be seen on an ultrasound this month. The major organs are beginning to form this month, such as the brain, lungs, stomach and liver.
The embryo is getting closer to looking like a real baby. The head and trunk can be seen this month. You won’t be able to tell if the baby is male or female for quite some time. Tiny arm buds begin to form this month and hands and feet will be developing by the end of this month.

For dating purposes, the first month of your pregnancy is actually calculated by the first day of your last menstrual period. It counts the weeks prior to ovulation, even though you were not pregnant at that time. Doing this helps the doctor estimate your due date. You can calculate your date at home, prior to your first visit. Count nine months from the date of your last period. Then add seven days. This will be your estimated due date.
